My flight was delayed and when I arrived, they could not find my reservation. They offered to rent me a car for the same period of time for $360 while my reservation was only $115. I refused the offer and went to costco.com to book a car to pick up 20 min after that for $156 with Budget. Never again with this company.

My rental was not at the expected location. When I searched in Kayak, I searched for car rentals near the San Diego airport. Apparently there is a small municipal airport near the border with Tijuana and there is a Hertz car rental location there which came up in my search. Since I would not have expected this type of option to come up in my search parameters, I did not think there was a need to check the address of the rental location. A mistake I will never make again. However, I also will never be using Kayak or Hertz again. I will not be using Hertz mainly because the person at the rental counter in the actual San Diego airport location was not willing to help me other than to indicate that I was at the wrong location and that I should go to that other location if I would like my rental car.

Supplier choice

I put in San Diego Airport and it listed this place half an hour away, at a different little airport right next to the border. They were unprofessional and the agent was apathetic. Our flight was delayed a few hours and she said our reservation was cancelled because they only keep it for an hour after the pickup time you put on the reservation. I have never heard of that before anywhere else! So, they charged me about $70 more than the reservation I had set up!

Terrible experience overall. Stay far away from this place for many reasons: 1. Car rental facility is far from San Diego (on the border with Mexico), 2. Staff does not speak English. 3. No flexibility with rental terms. 4). Unreliable cars. Ours broke down the second to last day, with less than 50 total miles driven. Car had to be towed back. Never received so much as an apology (again, the language barrier), let alone an offer to remunerate for the giant fiasco that was this rental experience. Long story short, do not rent from them!

Ended up paying $200+ because I booked here from the airport rental center and this app booked it 30 min away to one close to the damn border. I’d had to get a Uber for not only myself but for my 2 kids aw well. Ended up settling to just rent from the location the shuttle already took us to, just to find out it’s gonna be $350 more. Manager did to some adjusting to get it a lil lower. I was grateful for that. Also upgraded my vehicle for no cost. :)

Incorrect pickup location regardless of calling to verify after booking. I even called to verify pickup and time change the day before...but when I showed up to pick up the vehicle, they said I had to go to a different location nearly an hour away and they were long since closed. Had to leave without a vehicle and go with a different rental car company hoping they could assist.

The car was not ready when I got there. They gave me a un upgrade to a Camaro. When I dropped off the car (early) I was charged an extra 50 dollars.

I took an uber to get to the CBX location. The guy at the desk brought up my reservation/confirmation code and said "We don't have a car for you because the reservation wasn't made more than 72 hours in advance." He also added that 'they almost never even have those kind of cars' (EV) and then just went back to looking at his computer. I asked what other options I had and he said none, they had no other cars and he again went back to what he was doing, completely ignoring me. I had to uber ($50+) to the downtown airport to get a car at a different agency/price because no-one at CBX had a car. I was warned by the SAN location and by the first uber driver that this was a franchise and that they often didn't have cars they said they had. Never ever again, because you are really stuck out there with no options, and it's a long way from anywhere. There was no notice that the reservation would not be valid because it hadn't been made more than three days before the pickup time, in fact it was quite the opposite. The Kayak email subject was "It’s official: you got a ride for San Diego" The body of the text said: You’ve secured your car for San Diego. Jun 8 - Jun 16 Let’s cruise, your trip is good to go. We saved your rental car info to our Trips tab to help you stay organized while you plan. Here are the details - you’re one step closer to your destination. (and then it showed all of the details of the reservation). Of course that led me to believe I was good to go :( Instead, it was hours on the phone as well as an expensive uber ride and a far more expensive on-the-spot car rental at SAN. Good help is hard to find, and the guy at AVIS/CBX was not good help at all with his 'you should have known better/dismissive' attitude.

Cons:

Pick up at 10am. No one at the counter until 10:15. Given a vehicle that ran out of oil (0%) during the trip. Called AVIS customer service. They told me I could either buy oil and bring the receipt to get reimbursed or I could go to a AVIS location and exchange the vehicle. I went to an AVIS location and was told there were no vehicles available and to just buy some oil to fill it up until the trip was over. Finally got back to the original location and they told me that I had to speak to the manager on the phone in order to handle my case. Would've preferred not having to go around in circles

Pros:

The staff was excellent. Ha accommodated me as much as possible as my reservations were not as planned/ordered/requested.

Cons:

When I reserved the rental car I wanted to reserve from airport and the agent had told me my car reservations was at a location 30 miles away so I had to pay the difference to reserve from that location.

Pros:

Nothing at all.

Cons:

To know that when you reserve through a third party, the companies do not abide by the contracts and the customers end up paying more for the product. Sometimes, even getting their contract voided.

It was the worst car rental experience I have ever had. I booked through Kayak, prepaid and flew into San Diego. After landing, wewere waiting with several other Kayak customers for the shuttle, and when it showed up, the driver said "we don't have any more cars". They weren't apologetic nor did they give us a voucher for a future rental. They said Kayak overbooked them and that was that. They did offer to give us a refund. I then had to go to Avis and pay an enormous amount because they were almost out of cars. I would never rent a car from there again. So buyer beware, you get what you pay for.

When I arrived at the car rental station I couldn't find Ace. I called 3 times - was connected to someone, then when i asked where they were, I was put on hold then disconnected. I never found the Ace rental counter.

Supplier choice

I probably didn't read the correspondence carefully. My drivers license wasn't sufficient ID and they required a second form of ID. If I hadn't had one on me I would have had to go to another counter to rent. You should make that requirement in BOLD print so I can't skim past it.
