Things to do in Bali: Explore Bali beaches
Renowned for its idyllic coastline, a trip to Bali isn’t complete if you don’t check out the best beaches on offer. Pack your sun cream and swimming gear because we guarantee you’ll find it hard to peel yourself away from the white sand and pristine waters.
Blue Point Beach
If you’re looking at what to see in Bali, then Blue Point Beach should be high on your itinerary. Located on the southernmost point of the island, it’s about a 1 hour drive from the capital, Denpasar. Hidden behind a rugged rock formation, this beach offers golden sands and turquoise waters that will make you feel like you’ve found your own corner of paradise. This is more of a surf beach than for swimming, with there also being lots of space to camp out and watch the beautiful sunsets.
Geger Beach
Another beach that is a must-do in Bali is Geger Beach, which is also located in the south of the island, about 35 min from the capital city. Considered one of Bali’s most beautiful beaches, it’s a secluded beach that offers calm and safe waters for swimmers of all levels. It’s a great place for families to enjoy, with there being a variety of water sports on offer too. Add to that the iconic Nusa Dua Golf Course flanking the beach and a space for nudists sunbathers to enjoy some privacy, and this beach caters for all.
Pemuteran
When you’re visiting Bali beaches, there are also lots of idyllic locations in the north of the island. Pemuteran is about a 35 min drive from West Bali National Park, so you can visit this protected area of coastline with ease from the beach. Pemuteran tends to be less busy than other beaches on the island, which is great if you want to avoid the crowds, and it boasts a beautiful mountainous backdrop. This beach is ideal for scuba divers and snorkellers who want to explore the native marine life, whilst the sublime scenery provides budding photographers with the perfect place to take the perfect picture.
Enjoy sublime nature in Bali
Natural beauty doesn’t get much better than in Bali, with the island spoiling us with its range of mountains, national parks and waterfalls. Step into a world that is a far cry from normality and soak up the natural beauty that has to be seen to be believed.
Tegenungan Waterfall
When you’re looking for what to do in Bali, it’s always a great idea to take advantage of the natural beauty of the island. Starting with Tegenungan Waterfall, which is around a 40 min drive north of Denpasar, you’ll be able to enjoy a short forest trek that brings you to the giant waterfall. The water drops about 15 metres, which makes it pretty powerful, so it’s not recommended to wade underneath it. However, the pool around the waterfall is a great place for a refreshing dip.
The walk to and from the waterfall is quite steep too, so we recommend heading there in the early morning to avoid the heat of the day. You’ll need a good pair of hiking shoes for the terrain, whilst a water bottle is a must so you can stay hydrated.
Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall
Another waterfall that is well worth visiting is Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall, in the north of Bali. Located about a 40 min drive from Buleleng, you’ll have to embark upon a roughly 20 min hike through a banana plantation to reach your destination. You’ll be well rewarded after the walk, though, with four glorious waterfalls to enjoy. The main waterfall is encircled by a rock amphitheatre that oozes misty steam into the surroundings.
One of the best things about this waterfall compared to others on the island is that there are far less tourists, so you’ll be able to enjoy these marvellous natural sights without large crowds. As with other waterfalls in Bali, you’ll be quite secluded, so ensure you have provisions and plenty of water for your trip.
Mount Batur
One of the most iconic activities you can do in Bali is visiting Mount Batur, which is a dramatic, roughly 5,600-foot-high volcano. This mountain also contains the island’s largest crater lake as well as picturesque views in every direction. An ideal location for fitness fans, you can take on one of the cycling routes or hiking trails too. To get to the top of the mountain requires an early start, as you’ll want to avoid the heat of the day.
The ascent takes about 2 hours, and if you want to catch the sunrise, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with a majestic mist-sheathed view. If you can’t make sunrise, you’ll still be able to take in amazing vistas that won’t disappoint. Water, food and a robust pair of shoes are a must for this natural phenomenon.
Tukad Cepung
In the east of Bali, you’ll find Tukad Cepung, which is one of the most picturesque waterfalls on the island. Whilst the site itself is small, it’ll leave a large and lasting impression on you. The journey to the waterfall is a precarious one that isn’t for the faint-hearted. There are numerous steps and crossings you’ll have to tackle before you’ll be rewarded. It’s well worth it, though, especially if you visit during the earlier part of the day, when natural light breaks through the crevices of the towering rocks and illuminates the rock pool below.
Arriving later in the day has its own benefits too, with there being remarkably fewer tourists for you to compete with. Whilst you can’t swim here (due to the water not being deep enough), you can make the most of a waterfall shower, so remember to bring your swimming attire. You can reach the waterfall in about 50 min by car from Ubud or around 1 hour from Denpasar.
Best places to go in Bali
From a jungle swing to a hidden canyon, some of the best things to do in Bali are bucket-list worthy. Read on to find out about our top tips for the best places to go when you’re visiting the Indonesian island.
Bali Swing
One of the best things to do in Bali is the Bali Swing, which is reminiscent of an adult-style playground. Surrounded by jaw-dropping jungle, you’ll be able to hop onto one of 12 giant swings that offer you perfect panoramic views. Ideal for those looking for the perfect snap, this is a location you’ll definitely want to add to your itinerary. Located around a 40 min drive north of Denpasar, it’s great fun for all.
With swings that range from 12 metres to 78 metres, it’s also ideal for anyone who wants their adrenaline hit. Safety is paramount, though – you’ll be buckled in, so you can sit back and enjoy the view.
Ubud Monkey Forest
Another of the top things to do in Bali is to visit Ubud Monkey Forest. Located only a short car journey or walk from Ubud, it’s a fantastic place to see long-tailed Balinese macaques in their natural environment. The holy site, which also boasts three ancient temples, is also where Balinese Hindus go to pray. Whilst it’s a very popular tourist area, it’s important to respect the monkeys (which can be aggressive if provoked) and the local worshippers.
Beji Guwang Hidden Canyon
Bali is full of sacred sites, with Beji Guwang Hidden Canyon being another example of the island’s fascinating culture. A Sukawati-based ravine, you’ll have to trek, climb, scale and swim your way to the hidden site. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with pools, waterfalls and carved rocks that have been shaped by erosion from the Oos River.
This is only possible with trained guides, so do not attempt it on your own. It’s also not advised to do this activity during the rainy season, with currents being particularly hazardous. You can get to the ticketed entrance in about 30 min from Denpasar, which makes it a convenient day trip.
Visit some amazing temples in Bali
Bali has a rich history and culture, with its temples being an example of the best things to do on the island. Marvel at the ancient architecture and soak up the stunning scenery on a range of temple day trips.
Tanah Lot Temple
One of the top things to do in Bali is to visit Tanah Lot Temple, which is renowned for combining the natural, cultural and historical elements of Bali. This Hindu temple, which is a famous pilgrimage site, is situated on a stunning rock facade by the sea. It’s about a 40 min drive from the centre of Denpasar, located on the west coast. Sunsets here are one of the top reasons to visit, with photographs being breathtaking as the sun disappears behind the temple.
This is the ideal activity for families, romantics and groups, with it being a convenient location. There is also a range of restaurants and bars nearby, as well as beaches, more temples and hiking routes, so you can look to spend the whole day here.
Gunung Kawi
Located in the centre of Bali is Gunung Kawi, which is another temple of historical and cultural importance. This Hindu temple was built in the 11th century and consists of a variety of courtyards and cliff-carved shrines. Situated on the Pakerisan River, you can reach it in about 30 min by car from Ubud. As legend has it, Kebo Iwa, who was a fierce warrior, sculpted the intricate carvings using only his fingernails.
To reach the site, be prepared to earn it. There are about 300 steep steps to reach the destination, but it’s all worth it once you arrive. Our tip is to travel there during the earlier hours of the day because it’s both quieter and cooler, making it far more comfortable all around.
Pura Lempuyang Luhur
Located on the less touristy east coast of the island is Pura Lempuyang Luhur, another temple that is, without doubt, one of the best things to do in Bali. To get to this fascinating site, you’ll need to take a roughly 1 h 45 min car journey from either Ubud or Denpasar. This seven-temple complex is well known for the Gateway to Heaven, which perfectly frames the impressive Mount Agung in the background.
To enter the temple, you’ll need to make a donation and either bring or hire a sarong. You will also need to pay for the 4×4 journey up and down the mountain, which costs approximately Rp 40,000 (£2). We recommend visiting the site in the early morning before the crowds have arrived. It’s also a great chance to see the sunrise over the island.
Top Bali attractions
When you’re in Bali, there are other top attractions that should definitely be added to your itinerary. Take in the Gili Islands or head to Sukawati Art Market for experiences that you won’t forget.
Gili Islands
When you’re looking for where to go in Bali, the Gili Islands should be high on your list. A small three-island archipelago that is even more tropical than the already impressive mainland, you’ll be able to enjoy crystal-clear waters and white sands. The islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are the ideal spot for a bit of diving and marine exploration.
Away from the beaches, you’ll also find there are a plethora of activities for you to enjoy, such as cooking classes, cultural experiences and partying. Head to Gili Trawangan to catch up with other backpackers and enjoy the nightlife. Or, if you’re with young children or on a romantic trip, Gili Meno and Gili Air are great destinations. To get to this superb location, take a boat from Padang Bai Harbour in around 90 min.
Sukawati Art Market
One of the great activities in Bali is to visit Sukawati Art Market. It’s a good alternative to Ubud Market, due to it being cheaper and quieter. Located equidistant from Ubud and Denpasar, you can reach it in about 30 min by car. Once you’ve arrived, you can enjoy a range of impressive handcrafted artworks.
Whether you’re after framed paintings or wooden sculptures, vibrant dresses or home goods, it’s got the lot. Haggling the price down is also common practice, so you should be able to get most items cheaper than the initial price. Get there early in the day to ensure you don’t miss out on some of the prized items for sale.
Hiking – the best thing to do in Bali
Get your hiking boots ready and prepare for a trek that will take you through stunning scenery and provide picturesque views. From mountain walks to national parks, there’s a level for everyone.
Mount Batur Sunrise Hike
The Mount Batur Sunrise Hike is one of the best things to do in Bali, with it being one of the more popular trekking routes on the island. Taking about 4 hours in total, this roughly 7 km (4.3 miles) hike doesn’t disappoint. It’s a moderate level too, so people of all ages can enjoy the walk. You’ll have to be an early bird to make the hike though, with it leaving a good few hours before the sun is due to rise.
Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with the view from the roughly 1,717-metre summit. Staring over Batur Caldera and beyond Mount Agung, the fabulous array of colours of the already beautiful scenery is a sight to behold. We recommend doing this as part of a tour so that you don’t get lost but also as it’s a great way to meet new people. Ensure you take some water with you so you stay hydrated and pack an extra layer to avoid getting chilly.
West Bali National Park
Another of the best hikes in Bali is that of West Bali National Park. With over 32 km (20 miles) of hiking trail, this is best done over two days, but you can also do smaller segments of the walk. The park is located in the northwest of the island and is about a 45 min drive from Negara. The beauty of this location is that it’s very secluded and is a far cry from the overcrowded image that Bali can conjure up.
During the trek, you’ll get to see Sunda deer, ebony leaf monkeys and common macaques. In order to do the hike, you’ll need to apply for a permit in the office at the entrance of the park on Prapat Agung. We recommend opting for a guided tour of the park, as the knowledge and experience the guides have can turn a simple walk into a truly memorable experience.

The capital city and most popular urban area in Bali, there are loads of reasons why you should visit Denpasar. From the laid-back Sanur Beach, which offers stunning sunrise views, to the bustling Kuta Beach, where you can watch the sunset, it’s a beachgoer’s haven. Add areas of historical importance, such as the 10th-century pillar inscription in Pura Blanjong Temple and fascinating exhibits in the Bali Museum, and it makes for the ideal place for all history lovers.
When it comes to kids, you can head to Splash Water Park Bali or Gria Reptil Zoo, so they’ll be entertained throughout the day. Finished off with a great shopping scene and top-quality restaurants and you will be all set for your trip. The centre of the city is only about a 20 min car journey from the main airport too, making it a very convenient place to base yourself for your adventure in Bali.
Ubud
Last but certainly not least is the thriving town of Ubud. Located in the uplands of Bali, it takes around 40 min to reach from the capital city. It’s a popular place for tourists to head to on the island, in part due to the plethora of activities that are on offer.
