Domestic travel is growing in popularity, and it’s easy to see why. The cost of international travel. Wrangling kids through airports. The inevitable hassle of delays. And the realisation that the UK offers some of the best holidays for families in the world, and they’re right on our doorstep.

The best UK holidays for families – tried and tested by kids

Here are my top 12 recommendations for unforgettable UK family holidays across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

1. Bude, Cornwall: Ideal for beach loving families

A sandy shore with colourful beach huts against the clear blue sky.

Bude, a coastal gem in North Cornwall, is one of the best uk beach holidays for families. We’ve spent many hours building sandcastles on golden Summerleaze beach and splashing in the waves at Widemouth Bay. Plus, the town exudes a friendly, laid-back vibe with an array of family-friendly independent shops and cafés to while away the hours in.

If you’re planning a visit, aim for the shoulder seasons to avoid the crowds and high hotel prices. Travelling at off-peak times can also make a huge difference to your travel time, which can make the car journey less stressful when travelling with children.

The summer months, especially August, can get quite busy, which might be a lot for young kids to handle. Visit in spring or early autumn, and you’ll have a more peaceful and enjoyable experience.

2. Westward Ho!, Devon: Best for adventurous families

If you’re a family of thrill-seekers, Westward Ho! in North Devon should be high on your best UK holidays for families list. Its iconic sandy beach and famous pebble ridge make the perfect natural playground for older children.

For extra adventure, my family loves taking their paddle boards, as they keep the kids entertained for hours. When everyone has worked up an appetite, visit an independent beachside café to enjoy local produce whilst watching the wonderful sea views.

For older kids, the South West Coast Path offers breathtaking views and is suitable for family hikes and picnics. The sea can get quite lively in the winter months, so this destination is best enjoyed during the warmer seasons. Plan your visit between late spring and early autumn to make the most of this incredible outdoor playground.

3. Pembrokeshire, Wales: Perfect for nature enthusiasts

Pembrokeshire is a haven for nature-loving families who enjoy hiking in breathtaking natural landscapes. Its rugged coastline, pristine beaches, and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park make it a top choice for families of all ages seeking outdoor adventures.

Pembrokeshire also offers plenty of budget-friendly accommodation options perfect for cheap family holidays in the UK. So, you can enjoy this natural wonderland without breaking the bank. Just be sure to pack your hiking boots and a sense of adventure.

4. Isle of Wight: A great destination for history buffs

The Isle of Wight, situated opposite Portsmouth just off England’s south coast, is in places a bit like stepping back in time. It has an old-world appeal matched with a serene pace of life that makes it a lovely place for a holiday. History buffs should take in Queen Victoria’s Osborne House and the super-fun Dinosaur Isle Museum.

There’s no shortage of educational and entertaining activities on offer. And when the kids have had enough culture, the beaches are some of the best in the UK, especially for young families.

To get there, head to the beach in Southsea where you can take the world’s only remaining commercial hovercraft direct to Ryde on the island. It’s a thrilling, noisy experience kids will love that you can’t replicate anywhere else. Taking just 10 minutes, it’s easily the fastest way to the island too.

Plan your trip for spring or early summer to pick up one of the island’s charming holiday cottages at an affordable price.

5. Isles of Scilly: Best for a relaxing family escape

If you have young children and are looking for a slower pace, the Isles of Scilly, located off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, is the UK holiday destination for you.

This secluded archipelago offers pristine beaches, clear waters, and a sense of calm that’s perfect for families looking to relax and recharge together.

Consider the Isles of Scilly for a long weekend getaway or a relaxing holiday. Just be aware that accessibility can be limited, so plan your travel arrangements well in advance. Once there, you and your family will find it’s worth every effort.

6. County of Durham: Ideal for culture-loving families

The impressive Durham Castle and Cathedral emerging from the surrounding hills and trees.

Set in the northeast of England, the County of Durham is a hidden gem rich in history, culture and natural beauty. The stunning Raby Castle should be at the top of your must-visit list.

My kids loved exploring the mediaeval castle, the vast deer park and the incredible outdoor play area that is great for kids of all ages. If anyone in your family is a Game of Thrones fan, then it’s worth visiting the Low Force Waterfall. Not only is it a stunning natural waterfall, it also featured in the hit TV show.

Self-catering accommodation is the most budget friendly option in the County of Durham, and also provides the space and flexibility families need during a UK break. The fact that this allows more funds for exploring the local attractions and enjoying the county’s unique atmosphere is a welcome plus.

7. Lake District: Best for active families

The Lake District is perfect for adventurous families with older children who love water activities and the outdoors. Blessed with rugged mountains, picturesque lakes, and countless outdoor activities, there’s no shortage of ways to keep everyone entertained.

Windermere is one of the most beautiful places in the UK to enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking or even windsurfing. If trying new things on holiday is something you enjoy, the Lake District provides many opportunities for families to experience exciting new adventures in a stunning location.

We had the most wonderful time canoeing as a family in this incredible location. It was a great way to introduce our children to outdoor water activities and what’s even better is that it’s suitable for children as young as four.

I highly recommend booking a holiday cottage for the ideal family retreat. Thompson Cottage is ideal for families, as it offers both the comfort of a home away from home experience as well as access to some of the most beautiful destinations in the UK.

8. Snowdonia, Wales: Best for families with teens

My family has a passion for nature and the great outdoors, and loved spending time in Snowdonia. This national park is a paradise for hikers, climbers, and explorers of all ages. Climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, offers stunning vistas and a sense of accomplishment for young adventurers.

If you love a thrill, why not take a zip line through a local quarry or fly through the trees on a forest rollercoaster for an extra adrenaline rush.

When planning your trip, keep an eye on the weather, particularly if you intend to tackle the more challenging trails. To make the most of your stay, consider renting a cosy cottage or cabin in the heart of Snowdonia’s natural beauty.

9. Edinburgh, Scotland: A great for city explorers

At the edge of town, three people stand on a cliff and stare out over the city and its many buildings and bridges, as well as the surrounding hills and mountains.

For families eager to explore a vibrant city with a rich history, Edinburgh is an excellent choice. The historic Royal Mile is a must-visit, offering a glimpse into the city’s storied past. Climbing Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano, provides panoramic views of the city. We also enjoyed a visit to Edinburgh Castle to see the Crown Jewels.

Edinburgh is ideal for families who are looking for exciting short breaks in the UK. There are plenty of flights from many UK destinations which makes visiting Edinburgh with kids accessible for lots of families.

10. Weymouth, Dorset: A budget-friendly option

A lively coastal town with boats lining the harbour and brightly coloured buildings along the shore.

If you’re looking for an affordable seaside escape, Weymouth in Dorset ticks all the boxes. Its golden sandy beaches, traditional seaside attractions, and budget-friendly accommodations make it an ideal destination for families on a budget.

The town’s lively atmosphere and beautiful coastline will make your family holiday one to remember without breaking the bank. One of our favourite memories is exploring the harbour and trying crabbing for the first time by the sea.

11. London: A city of adventure

England’s capital is one of the world’s great cities, and it’s tailor made for family holidays with kids of all ages. Start with the shops – Hamleys and Harrods, Borough and Portobello markets – giant playgrounds for adults and kids alike. And you don’t even need to buy anything.

Attractions are manifold. My family love the extraordinary twisting slide at the AcelorMittal Orbit in the fantastic Olympic area of East London. Equally the newly developed Battersea Power Station has attractions for every age. Take the underused Thames Clipper there and back and see the city from the river – hop on and off at different stops. It’s the best way to get around.

When the crowds and clamour get too much, head to my favourite spot in the entire city: Kew Gardens and stroll the serene parks while the kids go wild in the nature themed play zones.

12. Causeway Coast, Northern Ireland: An epic family road trip

The Causeway Coast offers Northern Ireland’s most stunning landscapes and one of Europe’s most famous natural attractions. Its entire length is a haven for fantastic family exploration and a road trip promises adventure to kids and adults of all ages.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Giant’s Causeway is even more extraordinary in real life than in its pictures. Huge mostly hexagonal basalt columns form impossibly complex shapes and patterns in towering, wild landscapes. Older kids will love the adventurous walk and rock hopping.

Nearby, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge serves up thrilling views of the Atlantic and a nerve jangling adventure for the adventurous. Dunluce Castle, with its cliffside location and fascinating history, is a great way to slow the pace.
