Kefalonia is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea off the country's western coast. This island boasts dramatic and diverse scenery, with bays and inlets along its coastline and more mountainous terrain further inland.
Approximately nine kilometres from Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, is Kefalonia's airport. Charter flights are made to the airport from various European cities during the summer. As Kefalonia has a few ports there are daily boat routes into the port of Sami and Poros in Kefalonia. Kefalonia has a typically Mediterreanean climate with sunny summers. In the spring and fall, visitors can expect a balmy climate of between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. Kefalonia is two hours ahead of GMT.
Visitors will be spoiled for choice on their Kefalonia holiday when it comes to world-class beaches. Beaches such as the the renowned Myrtos Beach have dazzling white sands and transparent waters. The beach is nestled between steep cliffs on Kefalonia's western coast. Among the variety of alternatives to visit are the Makrys Gyalos which has plenty of beach bars, and the golden-sanded Platys Gyalos Beach - another of the Blue Flag beaches in Kefalonia.
The most notable mountain in Kefalonia is Mount Ainos which rises some 1,600 metres above sea level. Visitors can hike the various mountain routes during their Kefalonia holidays. Kefalonia also has a variety of caves such as the Dogarati Cave and the Melisani Lake cave near Sami. In the island's capital, Arogostoli, visitors can check out the Archaeological Museum which houses various antiquities. The town also includes the Napier Garden which has lush vegetation and rare flora.
