Hiring a car in Bora Bora is a great way to explore this island with its white sandy beaches, and turquoise lagoons, set against a backdrop of towering mountains. There are limited outlets around the island, but you can find most major hire companies at Vaitape and one at Bora Bora Airport (BOB) which may be a great starting point for your trip. You will have the freedom to discover more remote regions as the island does not have a regular public transport system. Bora Bora has long been regarded as a luxury honeymoon option and you can hire a suitable convertible, or alternatively a family car or open-air buggy as the island has many family attractions with its water sports and diving opportunities. You can also choose to hire a low-impact economical car in respect of the local environment which hosts many conservation aspects such as the Turtle Sanctuary and Museum.
Driving is on the right-hand side of the road in Bora Bora and roads are generally in good condition, although bear in mind if you are driving at night-time, you may encounter people riding on scooters or bikes, often without lights, so remain vigilant. Animals can also be a frequent occurrence on the roads, especially in poorly lit areas, although you will find the larger main roads have streetlights. The roads can also get a little rougher and more bendy if you decide to explore the rugged mountain terrain, especially so after rainfall, so a 4x4 would be advisable. You can also take the coast road, which is in good condition and runs in a circular route around the island, to explore the dramatic coves and beaches. Bora Bora Island has only 19 miles of paved road, due to the island’s size and infrastructure and you will experience a lot of dirt tracks away from the main routes.
The minimum driving age in Bora Bora is 18 years of age, however, some car hire companies stipulate a minimum of 21 years to rent a vehicle. It is necessary to have a full valid licence. A UK driving licence is usually an acceptable form to use when hiring a car in Bora Bora, although it may be advisable to obtain an International Driving Permit to be on the safe side. You may also need a major credit card to complete your transaction, but it is possible you may also be asked to pay in cash, so make sure you have French Polynesian francs at your disposal.
