Car hire in the Dolomites is a great idea if you want to have more flexibility and freedom on your journey. You’ll be able to explore at your own speed and visit hard-to-reach locations, which isn’t always possible with public transport. The Dolomites is a stunning mountain range in northeast Italy, with many great locations to visit. With a hire car you will find it easier to reach some of the most popular destinations, such as Parco Naturale Paneveggio Pale di San Martino and Parco Naturale Sciliar-Catinaccio Naturpark Schlern-Rosengarten. It’s also great to just drive between the quaint towns and villages, too, which you can’t always reach using a bus.
Driving in the Dolomites is a fun experience, with the scenery being breathtaking throughout. The main roads in the mountain range tend to be well-kept, so you will find it easy getting from one location to the next. Whereas, rural roads are less well-maintained, so keep an eye out for potholes. The driving style is quite relaxed throughout the Dolomites, although in urban areas you will find that drivers are less patient and drive more aggressively. No matter where you’re driving, it always helps to stay calm and confident. In general, roads are quite narrow in the Dolomites, so it’s important that you drive with caution. Most towns are well-signposted, too, so you should be able to reach your destination easily. Don’t forget that in Italy, you will need to drive on the right-hand side of the road.
You will normally need to be at least 21 years of age to hire a car in the Dolomites. Some agencies will require you to be older, though. If you are under the age of 25, you will likely have to pay a young person’s surcharge to hire a vehicle, whilst your choice of cars will also be reduced, as most agencies have age restrictions on certain vehicle types. To hire a car, you will need to provide the agency with a valid ID and a current driving licence.
